Gonzalo Secco leads the FERRERE Company Law practice and is the co-chair of its Energy and Infrastructure teams.

He has broad experience with corporate clients, large-scale deals involving the public sector and government corporations, joint ventures, commercial agreements, and merger and acquisition transactions.

Secco’s practice includes business transactions and agreements involving major international corporations and large local businesses, as well as the Uruguayan Government. In the energy field, he has been involved in transactions between Bridas Corp. and China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), which implied participation in the Cruz del Sur gas pipeline and the Montevideo Gas natural gas distributor. He has also been involved in agreements between Petrobras and the Uruguayan state-owned oil company ANCAP for distribution of natural gas, as well as renegotiation of the concession with the Uruguayan government. He has also provided counsel on the country’s chief renewable energy transactions. He has participated in, among others, construction of a biomass energy plant by Weyerhaeuser, together with the related contract for electrical energy sale with the state-owned electric company UTE for a 20-year term. He was also involved in the industrial expansion and wind park project for Efice, a Uruguayan chemical manufacturer, as well as development of wind farms in Uruguay by ABO Wind Energías Renovables, of Germany.

Gonzalo Secco also counsels on corporate and foreign investment transactions in diverse sectors of production and services. For example, he advised on investments by the Canadian firm McCain for acquisition of assets of companies in the food sector in Uruguay (La Sibarita), and on acquisitions and sales of meatpacking plants by the US Global Protein Group. He was also involved in the disinvestment of Inter-American Investment Corporation in an inter-urban passenger transportation terminal and shopping center, as well as in advice to Senator Films on movie production in Uruguay.

Secco was ranked in Band 1 in Energy & Natural Resources by Chambers 2016. is regarded by many as the outstanding lawyer in the market, says the publication and adds: “He plays a leading role in some of the largest renewable energy deals, particularly for wind farms.” .” Sources describe him as "calm, measured and very good at negotiating," He was also recognized in the Corporate/M&A area, where hee "stands out for his intelligence, dedication and astuteness."

Secco studied law at Universidad de la República (Uruguay) and earned his degree as attorney in 1996. He did graduate programs, including the 40th edition of The Academy of American and International Law at Southwestern Institute for International and Comparative Law, in Dallas, Texas (2003). He has also taken various courses in the Master’s Program in Company Law at Universidad de Montevideo.

He was an instructor in Company Law at Universidad ORT (Montevideo) through the year 2000.

He is a member of the Uruguayan Bar Association and the International Bar Association (IBA).
