Counting BMW Bank, SunTrust Bank and Bank Mendes Gans among its recently acquired clients, Ferrere’s ‘responsive, knowledgeable and practical’ department is headed up by Carlos Pinto, who recently assisted GE Capital secure $2m-worth of collateral to back a loan to Clínica Foianini. He also acted for Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on the implementation of a trade-finance facilitation program to ease the opening of credit lines for small and medium-sized companies seeking to develop projects. The practice is commended for its ‘commitment and professionalism’, and both Pinto and Lindsay Sykes are praised for their ‘sophistication’ and ‘good understanding of the industry’. Associate Salomón Eid is recommended.


Led by Carlos Pinto, with support from Gerardo Villagómez, compliance specialist Lindsay Sykes and associate Salomón Eid, the corporate and M&A team at Ferrere counts Craft, Roche, Bayer and Tata Motors among its clients, and is commended for its ‘great knowledge of the local aspects’ of the market, its ‘personalised service’ and its strong response times. Recent matters saw Pinto advise BTG Pactual on its purchase of Ferroviaria Oriental’s shareholding in Argentine corporation Aigre; Sykes assist Owens-Illinois with the Bolivian aspects of its purchase of Vitro’s glass container division (part of a $2.15bn global transaction); and the pair work in tandem on the Bolivian aspects of Shell’s acquisition of BG Group. The team was also active in the technology space, acting for Mojix on its $13m acquisition of TierConnect’s Bolivian subsidiary. Associate Delma Paz is also recommended and regulatory expert Diego Bohrt joined the La Paz office as senior counsel in February 2016. Other clients include International SOS, Scythian Limited and Maersk.


The clients of Ferrere’s ‘excellent’ team, jointly led by Alejandro Pimentel and Carlos Pinto, include Cummins, Orvana Minerals, Impala Terminals and Empresa Minera Inti Raymi. On the transactional side, clients praise the practice for being ‘very knowledgeable about antitrust processes in Bolivia’, and for being ‘attuned to the political aspects of cross-border transactions’. Pimentel advised Sociedad Minera Illapa on the acquisition of equipment for the exploitation of the Pailaviri mine, and assisted it with regulatory matters surrounding various mining operations. Gerardo Villagómez, formerly in-house counsel at COTAS, joined in April 2015; he is commended for his ‘reliability, clarity and flexibility’. Pinto is described by clients as ‘good at understanding the global context of transactions’. The department’s recent clients include Shell, Enerflex, Voith and Sandvik.


Partner Lindsay Sykes and ‘very efficient’ senior associate Carolina Finfera lead the ‘swift’, ‘professional’ team at Ferrere, with support from associate Diego Rodriguez; they are praised for being ‘spot-on with their remarks and observations’. Recent client wins for the growing practice include Cotas, Sbarro and Hanesbrands. The team handles the Bolivian portfolios of clients such a Bayer and DirecTV, and in the latter case, also manages the litigation related to more than 20 trade marks. Other clients include Radisson Hotels International, G6 Hospitality and Genomma Lab.


The ‘very good’ department at Ferrere is led by Alejandro Pemintel, with support from associates Meliza Aliaga and the ‘responsive, knowledgeable’ Luis Enrique Peréz. The practice is reported as ‘prompt’ and of late has gained new clients including Banco Fortaleza, Ecla, SNV and Weatherford. Recent matters saw Pemintel advise AXS on several negotiations with its union, and successfully represent the company against various employment claims. He also acted for Geeks On Site in connection with the closure of its Bolivian office. Clients include Empresa Minera Paitití, COMTECO and Grupo Industrial Larcos.


Ferrere’s ‘excellent’, ‘timely’, ‘high-level’ practice is led by the ‘very diligent’ Carlos Pinto who is praised for his ‘skills in conflict resolution and negotiation’. The team acts for developers, investors, buyers and sellers, and also provides tax and notarial advice. Pinto recently advised Forestry Management Services on the purchase of nine production farms, and assisted Cargill and FONPLATA with lease agreement negotiations. Other clients include Rholig Logistics, Maersk and Scythian. Senior counsel Diego Bohrt and associate Salomón Eid are also active in the sector.


The ‘excellent’, ‘responsive’ team at Ferrere is led by the ‘analytical’, ‘highly responsible’ and ‘committed’ Gerardo Villagómez, who joined the firm in April 2015 having formerly been in-house counsel at COTAS. He is supported by Carlos Pinto and associates Delma Paz and María Belen Mendívil. The developing practice counts JP Morgan Chase, Diamond Films and EasyTaxi among its recent client wins, and in recent matters assisted Ericsson obtain the reversal of an order from the tax authority that would have impaired the company’s ability to continue its commercial operations. Shell instructed the department on all tax aspects of the Bolivian leg of the energy giant’s acquisition of BG Group. Other clients of the practice include Dufry, AXS, Maersk and Grupo ACP Inversiones & Desarrollo.
