For decades FERRERE’s attorneys have represented gas and liquid fuel companies established in Uruguay and other jurisdictions. They advise the chief companies in this industry on day-to-day legal matters, on relations among partners, and on relations with the government and regulators.

In recent years this practice group has seen an enormous increase in the number of queries it receives and in new clients involved in renewable energies: wind, biomass, biofuels and solar. The group’s everyday practice includes obtaining generating licenses and other government permits, organization of corporate vehicles and contract structures satisfying the interests of developers and investors, and advice on execution of energy purchase and sale agreements with the government electric company UTE (PPA).

FERRERE represents global and domestic companies that it supports in green field projects, joint ventures and strategic alliances. The group of experienced attorneys in the energy field often coordinates with others, specializing in finance and environment, as well as with economists and engineers. The team advises Exxon, Petrobras, Chevron, Torp, British Gas, CNOOC, ABO Wind Energías Renovables, Vestas, Elecnor and Siemens, among other companies.

In addition to advising its private sector clients the firm has been a legal consultant to the government on developing and improving the energy regulatory framework. For example, it participated in consultancy services on designing the regulatory framework for natural gas transportation and distribution in Uruguay. More recently, it was retained to assist the National Energy Office on the regulation of Law No. 18,597 on efficient use of energy, including creation and operation of a trust.
